The global cybersecurity industry is expected to reach US $200-billion by 2023. Between 2012 and 2016, Canada had the fourth most cybersecurity venture capital deals in the world.

Make IT Secure 2019

RIC Centre had the chance to join the one-day conference last week in Brampton, to hear from leaders in cybersecurity and advanced manufacturing sectors, government officials, academic researchers and law enforcement representatives.

The event, co-hosted by the Cybersecure Catalyst at Ryerson University and the City of Brampton, facilitated a global conversation about emerging threats in cybersecurity and how organizations can proactively manage those risks. This event was the first of many to come as Brampton works to become a national centre for cybersecurity.

Since Canada’s manufacturers are leveraging digital technologies in all aspects of their businesses to an unprecedented degree, cybersecurity must be kept top of mind in this new manufacturing landscape.

Business leaders and cybersecurity professionals are being asked to protect manufacturing processes, IP and supply chains from cyber threats – but Canada only has a 7% annual growth rate in labour demand for trained cybersecurity professionals.

Building a Safer, Connected Future

Concerns about privacy, data and security aren’t just limited to advanced manufacturing but to organizations of all sizes, across all industries.

Consider product design, like those with IoT sensors and machine learning – there is nothing more important than understanding privacy and security when it comes to developing smart products.

Earlier this year, RIC Centre held a panel discussion that uncovered the same concerns: “It’s one thing to worry about the privacy of our personal devices, but it’s another thing to worry about the privacy and security of our nuclear power stations, driverless cars, or heart-rate monitors,” said Faizal Hurzook at Driving Dreams 2019. “I think there are very few things that are more important today than privacy and security, and it’s a key topic of conversation.”
