Now in its 29th year, the Toronto Fashion Incubator (TFI) is honoured to announce that Suzanne Rogers has again pledged a $25,000 cash award for Most Promising New Label at TFI New Labels®, the largest individual cash prize donation within the Canadian fashion industry. On May 3rd, 2016, four semi-finalists are poised to make their grand runway debut to Toronto’s sartorial luminaries at One King West. Amongst cocktails and fundraising buzz, one winning designer will be dubbed the Most Promising New Label, as well as granted a full-page feature in FLARE.
For TFI New Labels® 2016, rising stars will take centre stage: a dreamer enthused by architecture and period dress; an Italian-trained and androgyny-inspired Montrealer; a world-traveller whose collection acts as a visual representation of diversity; and a sustainability advocate taking cues from Canadian heritage.
The evening event will be honourably hosted by Glen Baxter: brand ambassador, content producer and bilingual journalist specializing in fashion and design.
Glen is best known as a CityTV and MuchMusic on-air personality and the Host of CTV's IN FASHION, which aired around the world for over a decade. Over the years, he has interviewed countless A-List fashion celebrities including heavyweights such as Tom Ford, Valentino, Vivienne Westwood, Roberto Cavalli, Donatella Versace and Karl Lagerfeld. In 2013, Glen was most notably awarded the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal.
The elite panel of judges that will mentor the four semi-finalists and elect who advances to the TFI New Labels® stage includes:
- David Dixon: President, David Dixon Inc., and former TFI New Labels® finalist
- Suzanne Rogers: Benefactor of the SUZANNE ROGERS AWARD FOR MOST PROMISING NEW LABEL
- Suzanne Timmins: Senior vice president and fashion director for Hudson’s Bay and Lord & Taylor
- Cameron Williamson: Editor-in-chief of FLARE
The four contemporary womenswear designers in the running to showcase their collections include: Peggy Sue Deaven-Smiltnieks for Peggy Sue; Karen Quirion for KQK; Defne Husrevoglu for GUN CONTROL; and Angelene Fenuta for ANGELËNE.

Defne Husrevoglu for GUN CONTROL and Angelene Fenuta for ANGELËNE
Peggy Sue Deaven-Smiltnieks founded Peggy Sue with the mission of revitalizing the North American farm and fiber industry. She works directly with farmers, start-up mills and artisans to design sustainable clothing that celebrates their skills. She has spoken at both New York University [NYU] and the Rhode Island School of Design [RISD] on sustainable sourcing.
Designer Karen Quirion launched KQK in 2012. An avid traveller with a thirst for different cultures, Quirion has studied in Italy, Argentina, and the United States. KQK is a fashion label offering sophisticated and easy-to-wear apparel for the modern woman who embraces a masculine aesthetic. Elegant and minimalist, the collection blends deconstructed urban style and femininity with tailored cuts.
Defne Husrevoglu started her fashion career with her first design job in Bolivia. It was there she designed a line of exotic leather handbags after completing her first semester of fashion at Seneca College. After her first design experience, she quit fashion school and moved to Paris to start a clothing line. GUN CONTROL is a fresh and innovative clothing line of ‘street couture’ and a visual representation of the travels and spirit of the designer.
A student of Central Saint Martins College Art & Design in London, England and Ryerson University’s School of Fashion, Angelene Fenuta’s collection, ANGELËNE, combines utility and strength in architectual shapes, inspired by Japanese culture. A contemporary womenswear label that builds upon core componnents of the female wardrobe, the line is known for its precision tailoring and unique pieces.
