Professor William Gough, professor of environmental science who has served as University of Toronto Scarborough Interim Vice-Principal Academic and Dean for the past 10 months, has been appointed to the position for a three-year term beginning July 1, 2016 and ending June 30, 2019, following an international search.
Gough’s twenty-three years of dedicated tenure at U of T Scarborough includes the development of innovative graduate programs in Environmental Science and in Clinical Psychology yielding historical graduate student enrolment success, increased quality and advancement of the campus’ commitment to innovative research and emerging areas of scholarship.

Through Bill’s distinguished career as a faculty member at U of T Scarborough, and his impressive administrative service, he has demonstrated his capacity to be an outstanding academic leader,” says Bruce Kidd, U of T Vice-President and Principal of UTSC.

He is visionary in regard to our future and willing to do the work necessary to help us realize our potential, set out in our ambitious academic plan for the campus.”
A noted climate change scientist, Gough received an MSc from University of Toronto and PhD from McGill University. He conducts research on climate change in the Eastern Arctic, climate change impact assessment, air quality in southwestern Ontario, hurricanes and climate change and other topics in climatology. He and his students have published over eighty papers in peer-reviewed journals.
Deeply committed to teaching and research, Gough received awards including the U of T Scarborough Faculty Teaching Award and the Scarborough Campus Students’ Union Teaching Award, as well as recognition from professional organizations including the Canadian Association of Geographers.
In addition to his current duties, Gough has served in progressively senior academic leadership positions—as department chair (Physical and Environmental Sciences 2010-2012), as Vice Dean Graduate (2009-2015), and as Vice Dean, Faculty (2015). He has also served as a member of numerous departmental and University committees, as an elected faculty representative on University of Toronto Governing Council and its committees, and as the inaugural Chair of the U of T Scarborough Campus Council.
