Every term, Velocity hires three co-op students to do key work on the marketing, programs, and science teams. If you are a University of Waterloo student, consider applying for the positions through WaterlooWorks for the upcoming Fall 2017 term. This blog post is the last in a series where past Velocity co-op students reflect on their experiences working in this one-of-a-kind workplace.

This past winter, Brianna Bennett completed her co-op term as the Velocity Science Assistant. Brianna is a Biology student and was interested in how entrepreneurship intersects with science. During her co-op term, Brianna spent her time between two science labs, on campus at the University of Waterloo in Velocity Science, and in downtown Kitchener at the recently expanded Velocity Garage. Her responsibilities included making sure both labs were well stocked, organized, and running smoothly. She also responded to Velocity Science inquiries, gave tours to community members, and attended events on behalf of Velocity Science, meaning no two days were the same.

“This position with Velocity Science helped me orient myself in a professional lab. Working in the space with these startups helped me better understand my schoolwork and the science field in general. I got to see so many startups from different science disciplines, like nanotechnology, and learned all about their unique needs and goals.” – Brianna Bennet, Velocity Science Assistant W17

Working at Velocity Science, Brianna was able to get a ground floor look at the world of entrepreneurship. “Working at the Velocity Garage and Science labs really made me realize that anyone can be an entrepreneur. I didn’t realize the extent of the network of young entrepreneurs on campus, and the resources available to all students!” In her current academic term, Brianna looks forward to learning even more about starting a business through her Women in Entrepreneurship class.
