On March 2, 2019, over one hundred change-makers will come together at CodeAcrossTO with one goal in mind – actually, make that 17.
CodeAcrossTO is an annual civic hackathon hosted by the grassroots organization, Civic Tech Toronto, and this year’s theme is “Toronto’s Take on Sustainable Development,” an exploration of local solutions to the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals. This annual event invites public organizations to pitch their real-world challenges to the city’s bright minds that then “hack” the problems using data, design, and beyond.
“CodeAcrossTO is not your traditional hackathon,” says Laura Chang, co-chair of this year’s event. “It’s not a race to code the best prototype; the goal is to scope real issues facing real people and seed solutions that can grow beyond one day.” Echoing her is co-founder of Civic Tech Toronto, the group behind CodeAcrossTO, Gabe Sawhney: “We’re not expecting a finished product; we’re looking for the outline of a thoughtful solution to a meaningful problem.” He continues: “CodeAcrossTO is a sort-of pop-up public process incubator. We want to enable connections between folks of different backgrounds and skill sets and for those collaborators to continue building their solutions after the event is done.”
This year’s CodeAcrossTO will take place at the newly built centre for entrepreneurship, Artscape Daniels Launchpad, overlooking Toronto’s waterfront. A few things to expect:
- An inclusive, accessible, all-ages, all-abilities event. No technical experience is expected nor required.
- A short line-up of speakers, (including Jutta Trevarius, Director of the Institute of Inclusive Design at OCADU,) covering topics from the power of civic technology to the role of innovation in sustainability, and the importance of inclusive design.
- Challenges facilitated by community leaders, including folks on behalf of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB), the Environment and Energy Division at the City of Toronto, Law and Design CoLab, and FreeGeek.
Light breakfast, lunch, and snacks will be provided throughout the day.
