This past March, Velocity hosted the Winter 2017 Velocity Fund Finals (VFF), a pitch competition that awards $125,000 each term to startups to help them build their business. We caught up with one of the $25K winners, Co-founder, Thouheed Abdul Gaffoor from EMAGIN, for a post-VFF update. You can watch their pitch from VFF online.

EMAGIN is an intelligence platform that enables water utilities to proactively manage their infrastructure in real-time.

1. How has your company developed since winning VFF?

EMAGIN has secured almost $1M in private equity seed funding from one of the largest global venture capital firms. Since then our team has grown to 11 employees.

2. What is your company currently working on?

EMAGIN is currently working on a number of pilot projects with municipalities and industrial facilities across North America – including Fortune 500 companies.

3. How have you moved forward with the funding you received?

EMAGIN has enhanced its marketing and design and has participated in a number of water industry conferences, growing our market presence and network.

4. Reflecting on the time since your win, what was your team’s most exciting moment? And most frustrating moment?

Most exciting – securing venture funding and closing projects.

Most frustrating – the all-nighters required to achieve the above.

5. Are there any tips you can give to startups that are pitching?

Every day has its own challenges, but the way our team works together to solve problems collaboratively is most fulfilling. And practice your pitch like crazy.

6. What did you like most about competing at VFF?

VFF is an incredible event that attracts investors and greatly improves the visibility of companies that participate.

Next Thursday, July 20, another twenty startups will compete at the Velocity Fund Finals in the SLC at the University of Waterloo to pitch for their share of $125,000. Don’t miss this event by registering to attend! Come join us for a great event with awesome pitches and free boxed lunches for the first 200 attendees. Audience members and live stream participants will also have a chance to win 1 of 5 VR headsets!
